MANILA, Philippines – We see them every day—the plastic milk tea cups, plastic bottles, and the plastic containers that make our fast-paced lives possible. But the conversation is shifting from simply "throwing things away" to understanding that there is no such thing as "away."

The responsibility of managing waste has moved from being a purely personal headache to a massive, nationwide collaboration between brands and consumers. Your most loved mall, SM Supermalls, has spent years integrating waste management into the very fabric of its operations. Through its recently launched Sustainability Digest, shoppers are also invited to look a little closer at their own disposables and discover what happens when they are managed properly.

The Life of a "Disposable"

In a traditional "linear" lifestyle, a disposable item has a short, sad story: it’s used once and sent to a landfill where it could sit for centuries. But when waste is treated as a resource, that story changes.

Properly managed disposables, like the used fast-food containers, straws, and plastic wrappings you drop in SM’s Grey “Disposables” bin don't just disappear. They are diverted from oceans and landfills—sorted, formulated, and shredded into coal alternative fuel in SM GUUN.

The coal alternative fuel can then be used by SM’s corporate partners to reduce the industrial use of coal in their operations.

Small Shifts for a Big Impact

Managing waste properly doesn’t have to be a chore. It’s about simple and easy lifestyle shifts that make a world of difference:

  • Segregation at the Source: Practice segregation through SM’s Recyclable-Disposable-Compostable (RDC) Bins. With helpful visual guides and labels per bin, you can easily decide where your residuals go.
  • Empty and drained: Before tossing your disposables, remove any food scraps, liquids, and ice from them. Toss any organic material into the Compostable bin.
  • Mindful Disposables: Continue! Now that you’ve got the basics down, you can keep using the RDC bins at your most-loved SM Supermall. The more you visit, the easier it is to familiarize yourself with how to best segregate your waste.

"Waste management isn't just about keeping our malls clean; it’s about protecting the communities we serve," said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for corporate compliance and sustainability. "This Earth Day, we want to show that when we manage our disposables correctly, we aren't just getting rid of trash, we’re creating a more sustainable future for the next generation of Filipinos. By working together—shoppers, brands, and mall operators, we can ensure that our ‘disposables’ don’t end up at landfill but find second life as fuel.”
