It’s official: 2023 is here, and with the changing of the calendar comes exciting new things. If you’re big on style, you’re probably just as stoked as we are to try emerging trends or give some not-so-new ones a fresh spin. No need to search far, though: We’ve taken the liberty to handpick some of the best and most wearable looks this year—from fashion and accessorizing to makeup and hairstyling. Think you can pass the vibe check? Shop all the trends at SM Supermalls and enjoy hot deals all year round, too!
P.S. Don’t forget to check out our fun ‘New Year, New You’ ideas here for an inside-out makeover to match your new look.
The trend: Denim mania
Shop the trend: Ripped Wide-leg 90s Jeans, P2,395, Bershka (right); Bench x Stray Kids Better Made Men's Denim Pants (middle, as worn), P899.75, Bench. (Images from Instagram.com/bts.bighitofficial; nadine; bershka.com/ph; bench.com.ph)
Cool kids, bring those denims out. From baggy pants and casual button-downs to full-on denim outfits, the “jean” look is here to stay. Get style inspo from Nadine Lustre, a.k.a. President Nadine, who can make any pair of pants look ultra sexy (FYI: Wide-leg pants are uso again!). As for the guys, take your cue from K-pop idol Kim Nam-joon a.k.a. RM of BTS and the guys of Stray Kids—you can check out the latter’s fashion collab with local powerhouse Bench for affordable, casual-cool pieces.
The trend: Chunky footwear
Shop the trend: (From left) Loafers, P2,995, Zara; Melissa Brave Platforms, P4,995, available at ShopSM; Seraphine Heel Sandals, P1,799, CLN. (Images from Instagram.com/bernardokath; zara.com/ph; ShopSM; cln.com.ph)
If you haven’t yet, get set to embrace the chunky shoe era and make a statement with bulky loafers (like Kathryn Bernardo), platform sandals, and block heels. Don’t worry: There’s a silhouette to suit every style and occasion—from preppy and girly to edgy and even vacation-ready—so you won’t run out of options.
The trend: Curated accessories
Shop the trend: Earrings and ear cuffs, P799, and 3-pack rings, H&M. (Images from Instagram.com/sueannadoodles and bits.bighitofficial; Hm.com)
These days, it’s not just IG feeds that are being carefully curated; even jewelry combinations, too! Multiple ear piercings are all the rage—just check out Sue Ramirez’s chic ear candies, a.k.a. a Gen Z way for self-expression. Meanwhile, everybody’s fave K-pop group BTS (including Jin, pictured here) is getting much credit for energizing the male accessory scene with their effortless use of bling, from rings and bracelets to hats and belts.
The trend: His and hers bags
Shop the trend: Round Mini Shoulder Bag, P790 each, Uniqlo; Double Handle Tote Bag - Black, P3,299, Charles & Keith (Images from uniqlo.com/ph; charleskeith.com/ph
Mini bags, totes, back-to-work bags: These bag trends aren’t just functional, they’re made for both guys and gals, too. You can’t go wrong with a small shoulder bag or cross-body bag for everyday use—like the latest drops from Uniqlo, which you can totally share with your bae. For your back-to-work needs, stay on trend with a roomy tote, like this much buzzed about bag from Charles & Keith (pictured).
The trend: Relaxed hairstyles
Get the look: Find a salon via the SM Directory. (Images from Instagram.com/jennaortega and austinbutler; Watsons)
Forget about too-done hairstyles. ‘Tis the year for more relaxed ‘do’s, like this choppy bob on Jenna Ortega (more popularly known as Wednesday in the Netflix reboot), which boasts effortless body and movement. The trend applies to guys, too: Just take a look at Elvis star Austin Butler and his mussed-up locks with lots of texture. Some stylers that can help: Try Grips Hair Clay, P142, or Hair Treats Hair Mousse, P260, both available at Watsons.
The trend: Inclusive makeup and skincare
Shop the trend: blk cosmetics, available at Watsons and The SM Store; Some by Mi skincare available at Look at Me (Images from Instagram.com/blkcosmeticsph and somebymi.official_ph)
ICYMI: Cosmetics and skincare products aren’t just for the ladies anymore. Gender-fluid beauty is conquering the scene both globally and locally, with more brands offering products for a wider market—men, women, dark, fair, and everyone in between. Rock the au naturel look with blk cosmetics’ Universal 3.0 line (a must-try is their Skin Tint Sun Shield, which comes in nine shades) or beef up your anti-aging regimen with skin savers from trending K-beauty brand Some by Mi.
