It’s the usual frenzy that accompanies every Apple smartphone release: this time, for the iPhone 14. But what makes the newest variant so exciting?
The latest model comes in four variations: the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will come in similar colors: you can choose between blue, purple, midnight, starlight, and red shades. Meanwhile, the Pro line will see models in deep purple, gold, silver, and space black.
The iPhone 14 line comes in two sizes: 6.1” for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, and 6.7” for the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus.
A mobile phone camera seems to be one of the most important features of a phone nowadays. Fortunately, every model in the iPhone 14 line boasts a TrueDepth front camera with autofocus, plus a photonic engine that promises depth, detail, and color.
The Pro line, on the other hand, features a few extras that include a 48MP main lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens with a 6x optical zoom range. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus only carry the main and ultra-wide lenses with a 2x optical zoom range.
While night mode portraits, macro photography, and Apple ProRaw are exclusive to the Pro lines, all iPhone 14s allow night mode photography, as well as the ability to choose from six portrait lighting effects and a handful of photographic styles.
Perhaps a controversial move on Apple’s part, the new generation of iPhones is sold with a wire that connects lightning to USB-C, but still without an adaptor. This means you will have to avail the adaptor from authorized retailers. However, each smartphone is capable of fast-charge, which promises a 50% charge in a span of 30 or so minutes (using the 20W adaptor that is sold separately).
Video playback capability ranges from 20 hours on the iPhone 14 to 29 hours on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, with audio playback ranging from 80 hours to 95 hours on each iPhone respectively. Overall, a fantastic option especially for those looking to level up from previous models (or phones with deteriorating batteries).
Following its predecessor, all models in the iPhone 14 line will feature Face ID to help lock and unlock phones and applications. There is also the Emergency SOS ability which has been available in many previous iPhone models. What’s new with the 14 is its crash detection ability. Designed to recognize serious car crashes and alert authorities and emergency contacts, the new feature provides an added layer of safety to drivers on the highway.
To protect the mobile phone itself, every model on this generation of iPhones boasts a ceramic shield front, which they promise is tougher than other smartphone glasses. They are also water resistant to a depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes. While the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are made of aerospace-grade aluminum, both Pro models are manufactured with surgical-grade stainless steel.
