A walk around the Gourmet Farms estate in Silang, Cavite offers anyone a brief respite from the stressful city life. The fresh air, the smell of coffee roasting, the gentle farm animals, the countless lines of plants and trees all contribute to a picture of calm and serenity, that one may shortly forget that everyone—including the company—is actually going through a lot.

Just at the start of the year, Gourmet Farms was one of the establishments affected by the eruption of the Taal Volcano. Its green landscape was completely covered with gray ashes. Instead of succumbing to this setback, the company and its people worked together to recover.

“The Taal ash had a silver lining. The entire field was wiped out. We got hit in the sense that we needed to fix things. But we were also able to fertilize the soil,” said Roldan Capito, Gourmet Farms’ Head of Marketing.

Now, like many businesses, Gourmet Farms is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many institutional buyers of its products still closed. But just like with previous challenges, Gourmet Farms forges on by taking care of its people—they shuttle them to and from work and make sure safety protocols are followed—and recalibrating their business strategies.

“Most coffee drinkers would stick to the brand they are used to. Our customers continue to patronize us. We have made our products accessible online and in our own social media,” Roldan shares.

“We have been talking a lot with Kultura how we could sell our products online. There have been good collaborations,” chimes Ginny de Villa, Gourmet Farms’ Director for Sales and Marketing.

Noting that more people are now into wellness, Gourmet Farms is boosting the production of its healthy offerings.

“In the time of the pandemic, we forged on, we did not fold,” Ginny says.
