Supporting women empowerment and maternal health
Our Program for Women and Breastfeeding Mothers promote the good health and well-being of women and nursing mothers. With the establishment of the Breastfeeding Stations across all SM Supermalls nationwide, the program supports the individual choices that a mother may make, with regard to her health and breastfeeding preference. The program also supports partnerships that advance the cause of women’s health such as the annual Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer and Breastfeeding Month celebrations promoting that it’s #FreeToFeedAtSM
Our partners include the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Philippine Breast Cancer Society, and the Philippine Ballet Theater.
Breastfeeding Stations in all SM Malls Nationwide
Mothers are free to breastfeed anywhere in the mall and SM supports their individual choices on child care and nourishment. For mothers who opt for comfort and privacy, 80 SM Malls have breastfeeding stations typically located beside the Mall Clinic. To date, more than 1M mothers have already been served by the Breastfeeding Stations, since its first Breastfeeding Station in SM Megamall established in 2006.
Pink Ribbon Day for Breast Cancer
Pink Ribbon Day is held every October in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Annually, hundreds of women are given free clinical breast examination. Motivational talks from breast cancer survivors are also part of the program. The project is held in partnership with the Philippine Breast Cancer Society and the Department of Health.
Mother-Baby Friendly Workplaces
SM Cares is committed to making all SM malls Mother-Baby Friendly Workplace Certified, ensuring that breastfeeding employees and customers have access to supportive facilities and policies. In partnership with the Department of Health (DOH), SM has begun certifying its malls, starting with locations in CALABARZON, to provide a nurturing environment for working mothers. Additionally, SM has partnered with Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital to establish Human Milk Depots, allowing mothers to safely donate and store breast milk. This initiative reflects SM’s goal of fostering workplaces and public spaces that prioritize maternal and child health.
Safe Spaces Act
In line with the Bawal Bastos Law, SM conducts nationwide seminars to train mall managers, operations teams, and frontliners in preventing gender-based harassment. This initiative, in partnership with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), reinforces SM’s commitment to creating harassment-free and women-friendly spaces in all its malls.
