The Plastic Waste Collection (PWC) Program is a partnership with NGO HOPE and supported by Pricewaterhouse Coopers. First launched at SM Megamall on February 10, the program aims to reduce plastic waste in landfills and oceans through proper plastic segregation and disposal. The malls become a venue for customers, tenants and surrounding offices to participate actively in the circular economy or the reuse of plastic material.
Customers may voluntarily drop off their plastic wastes daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Blue PWC container vans are located in fourteen (15) malls to date - SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, SM City Fairview, SM City Marikina, SM Southmall, SM City East Ortigas, SM Marilao, SM City Pampanga, SM City Telabastagan, SM City Dasmariñas, SM City Rosario, SM City Cebu, SM City Davao, and SM City Sucat
The PWC program accepts all kinds of plastic wastes excluding PVC pipes and material. Examples are plastic sando bags, PET and HDPE bottles, Styrofoam, disposable containers, utensils and straw, sachets, snack packs, shampoo, conditioner and detergent containers, bubble wrap, and e-commerce pouches. The plastics must be empty, clean and dry.
SM partnered with HOPE, a non-profit organization, to weigh and haul the plastics and brings them to valorizing affiliates which process them into either material for cement, into paver blocks or planks and soon recycled PET bottles.
