Gift Ideas
LOVE BIG this Christmas
by Crislyn Nierva,  December 03, 2015

The joyous season is coming! I am sure people who are celebrating Christmas are looking forward to the merriest time of the year.

One of my childhood memories of this season is helping my late Mamang wrap gifts. Though life’s been hard during those times, my late Mamang would see to it that she has wrapped a gift for us and relatives even how small the present is. But if budget does not permit, she sees to it that she has something for us – her kids and husband – even if we don’t have anything for her. Hence I learned selfless giving and sharing.

As the ber-months kick in, I can feel the excitement. People start writing their wish list. I am not fond of making a wish list for others to know (and probably grant some of it) so I usually keep it to myself and just accomplish it one at a time. Not necessarily during the holiday season but anytime of the year, when I am financially able (for the material things). But now that I have my own family, and the first Christmas that we will be spending in our little abode, I am making a wish list not only for myself but for our little haven and my small family to enjoy.

My personal wish list.

It’s been years that I wanted a sewing machine for simple projects. Yes, sewing projects like DIY costume (I handsewn a Flintstones family costume during last year’s Davao Bloggers Society Christmas Party). Now that we have a place we call our own, sewing projects are popping in my mind one after another. I badly want a sewing machine! But since we have more important house projects to accomplish, that wish could wait a little longer unless there’s an unexpected blessing that I may be able to buy one. We don’t have a sofa yet as we only borrowed the parents-in-law’s foldable wooden chairs so I am wishing for one! I also want a dining set. What we are using at the moment is also borrowed plastic table and chairs from the parents-in-law. I am looking forward to have our first Christmas dinner at home with a new dining set. Keeping my fingers crossed!

My gift ideas for my loved ones. A wallet for hubby to replace his decade-old canvas wallet, and some tools that he can use for DIY projects at home. We recently moved in to our little abode and there are lots of storage projects that we need to do. Our toddler needs a kiddie table and chair set so I am including it in my list for Nati and some Play Doh cutters and molders to add to her toys.

For the rest of my loved ones, my gift ideas include: scarf, bags, lipstick, and brooch for the ladies. Sling bag, coin purse, tumbler, and phone case for the men. A pair of curtains, set of coasters, and kitchen towel set for the moms. Of course, I will not forget the kids (my nephews, nieces, and my godchildren)! Children’s books and educational toys are on top of the list for them. Might include clothes and shoes too if I can score affordable pieces. Shopping for gifts is tedious especially with a toddler in tow. But thanks to SM Supermalls because they’re a one-stop shop. As their jingle says “we’ve got it all for you!” We don’t need to go mall hopping to complete the gift list for they carry almost everything. Shopping with them is hassle-free considering that some stores are offering free gift wrapping! But I want to personally wrap gifts because I find it therapeutic.

Gift ideas for my loved ones.

On giving back to others. Looking back, we have been very blessed this year. Hubby got a fulltime job after being jobless for more than a year. Aside from that, we were just looking for a place we could rent but God answered our prayer to have a little crib. It’s far from our dream house but at least it’s a place we can call our OWN. There are lots of things, big and small that we should be thankful for. It’s time to give back to others especially to the less fortunate. I and the husband are planning to support our blogger friend’s gift giving drive this Christmas. Behind the Rolling Chair is giving back to the community and they have around 300 kids to benefit their advocacy this year. We joined their Back to School gift giving in 2 orphanages here in Davao City last 2013 and it so heartwarming to see the children’s faces lit up as they receive their school supplies. Seeing those kids’ genuine smile is a tear-jerker. I am pretty sure kids will be very happy to receive whatever we could give this year.

UPDATE (as of 11.24.2015): I decided to make hair trinkets for the girls instead of giving them toys and here I am working on the prototypes.

Last Saturday night, we joined the volunteers of Behind the Rolling Chair to wrap gifts. It was the very first time that the husband was able to wrap a gift all by himself. Achievement unlocked all for the love of the needy kids! Little Nati gave a hand too. She was our human tape dispenser as she enjoyed putting scotch tapes on her arm and hand us a piece when we need it. I just failed to document it in my phone. Bad mama!

SM Christmas Bears of Joy is also a great opportunity to give back to others this Christmas and we are planning to get one for Nati and keep that bear to remind us that during her childhood, we made an effort to share to others. At least in our own little way we can make one child happy. You too, can share your blessings through the Christmas Bears of Joy. One bear will definitely go a long way and warm the heart of a less fortunate kid. Who knows, that bear hug will change his/her life for the better.

Are you now ready with your wish list? Is your gift list complete? Then it’s time to start holiday shopping! Take advantage of the sale at the nearest SM mall near you so you can buy more without hurting your budget. Gifts doesn’t have to be expensive. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2016 everyone!
