Pinoy Christmas Carols
by Belle Piccio,  October 20, 2015

Christmas carols are the most sung songs every December.

In the Philippines, you’ll hear your first Christmas song as early as September. Our Pinoy Christmas carols have origins in the Spanish and American colonial periods, and some were written as part of the OPM movement. Here are our top 5 picks.

No.1: Ang Pasko ay Sumapit

A traditional Filipino Christmas song, “Maligayang Pasko at Masaganang Bagong Taon” or populary known as “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit” was originally composed by Vicente Rubi and Mariano Vestil in 1933 as “Kasadya ning Táknaa” (How Blissful is this Season). In 1938, a Tagalog version was used by Josefino Cenizal as a marching song for “Ang Pugad ng Agila”. Then in the 1950s, National Artist Levi Celerio also wrote Tagalog lyrics to the song and is still sung until today.

No.2: Himig ng Pasko

The song was originally written and performed by APO Hiking Society. The opening line describes the Amihan northeasterly trade winds around December.

No.3: Noche Buena

The song spotlights Pinoys Noche Buena tradition. Noche Buena is the traditional family dinner which comes at midnight after the family has attended the late evening mass known as “Misa de Gallo.” The song names some of the many possible Filipino dishes served during noche buena.

No.4: Sa Maybahay ang Aming Bati

Originally an untitled song commonly known by its opening line “sa maybahay, ang aming bati” it is part of a series known as “Maligayang Pasko.” It is playful in tune and is commonly sung by children during caroling. The theme is similar to the English carol “Here We Come A-caroling.”

No.5: Pasko na Naman

”Pasko na Naman” is one of the popular Pinoy Christmas song composed and written by Levi Celerio.
