Christmasing with the kids!

I didn’t think I would enjoy toy shopping that much until Vito started to show interest in the toy store section of the department store. It’s like a museum day for him, more than anything else. I’ve written about how we’ve instilled in him the discipline of “LOOK, DON’T BUY” at the toy store, and he has learned it well. I’ve never had a problem with him bratting about a toy he wants to buy but can only “look-not-buy.” And so when we head to the mall, he maintains this sense of discipline yet wonder at the things he sees. For this, I am a grateful parent!

There’s so much more than just toys for kids at the mall. I suppose it has to do with Manila being a “city of malls”, and the mall being more than just a place to shop. The “mall culture” isn’t simplistically materialistic. Let’s face it: Often times a nice, airconditioned mall is a pleasant respite from the traffic-riddled city outside. Personally, we go to the mall on weekdays, when there are less crowds and more room to run around for Vito. Ideally, we’d go to a park, but the reality is that we don’t live near one: we live near a mall. And a lot of times, that’s what we do in the mall: run around with the kids, hang out, have a meal, and just spend time together as a family.

This is something that malls like SM Supermalls “get” when it comes to kid-centric things to do, specially now that the holiday season is in full swing. Here are some ideas for you, especially the moms, grandmas, aunts here reading the blog!

Of course, no Christmas would be complete for the kiddos without a gift from their letters to Santa! There is an ongoing toy sale starting November 6, in all toy sections of the SM Super Malls. This is always fun for us, though we make it a point to go on weekdays to avoid the masses on Saturday and Sunday — which means Vito can have more time to look around and list down five or so items for his Christmas wish list. Toy Kingdom may be found in all SM Supermalls!

Kidzville is a fun indoor mini theme park and activity center for young kids ages 3 to 7. Vito enjoyed going to the Podium branch when it was still around, but the new location is in SM Aura. Looking for a great gift idea? Purchase some passes for your nephews, nieces and godchildren, so that the next time they hit SM Aura, they can spend an hour or several at Kidzville!

Santa Meet & Greets happen every weekend, all the way up to Christmas Day. We’ve always liked this tradition, even if Vito already knows about the real St. Nicholas’s story, just because it’s a cute way to elicit fun reactions from kids, haha! It also inspires kids to ask about the real reason for Santa, which gives parents the opportunity to talk about the history of the jolly old man in red. Santa Meet & Greets are in all SM Supermalls this holiday season.

Just this week, we took our 5 year old son to the bowling lanes in SM Mega Mall and had him try out bowling. He thoroughly enjoyed it, and I thought that Bowling Lessons would make a great non-toy gift this year. Why not purchase a set of bowling lessons and gift your kids, nephew and nieces with it? It would make a great cousin outing, I would think! Inquire at SM North EDSA, SM Mega Mall, SM Mall of Asia, and THESE BRANCHES listed in the SM Bowling website.

Does your kid have dreams of being the next world-class figure skater? Then a set of Ice Skating Lessons at the Mega Mall or Mall of Asia complex could be his or her dream come true! I used to skate as a child and teenager, and it’s an experience like no other, especially during this holiday season. Ice Skating lessons are available at the SM Mega Mall and SM Mall of Asia supermalls.

There are also loads of FREE holiday-centric activities for the season, like the Kids Musical and Kids Ballet (The Podium, starting weekends of December); the Hi-5 Australia live show at the SM Megamall (Nov 6-8), the Christmas Parades and Character meet & greets (happening various weekends in all super malls). Just goes to show that you don’t even have to buy gifts for the kids, just spend some time with them at the mall, doing fun things with other kids!
