Is “traveling more” one of your goals this year?

Nothing beats the feeling of knowing you’re about to explore a different place. Whether it's somewhere local or out of the country, it’s exhilarating to know that something surprising is waiting for your arrival.

They say half the vacation happens before you even land at your destination. Though planning and preparing for your trip can be stressful, it certainly has its own charm. So, to make sure that you hit your “travel more” goals this year with as little hiccups as possible…

Here are some tips to that can make you have a smoother and more enjoyable trip starting this 2024:

Plan ahead

Whether you are traveling solo or with a group, planning ahead gives you a lot of breathing room—especially for your budget. Booking your fares and accommodations in advance is a lot less cheaper than buying them just weeks or days before your intended travel dates.

Planning ahead also allows you to arrange your schedule, so you can file for that vacation leave without a hassle!

Research

Make the most out of every day of your trip by doing your research. Identify the attractions you want to see, the dishes you want to eat, and the coffee shops you want to hang out at. Try learning common phrases in their local language. Find out the common etiquettes and customs that they follow (i.e. some countries don’t allow tipping, or some countries consider it rude if you eat while walking).

Pack wisely

Are you traveling with only a carry-on or with an extra baggage allowance? What is the weather like during your stay? Know these things beforehand so you can maximize your luggage space and ensure that you leave room for pasalubong.

Make a list, check it twice

Aside from the clothes, write down all the things that you will need to bring for your trip such as medicines (especially for specific medical conditions that you might have), important documents such as your passport, any other form of identification (if traveling locally), tickets, hotel booking confirmations, travel insurance, and the like. Don’t forget to put your chargers and extension cords on the list too!

Exchange money or withdraw from an ATM at the destination?

This is also something that you should consider prior to your departure. If you’re bringing cash, have them exchanged at your trusted money changers to make sure you get the best rates possible.

Pro tip: For safe, easy, and fast foreign exchange transactions, Foreign Exchange Counters are available at all SM Store branches.

Withdrawing money is also another option—even when you’re abroad! The exchange rates are often usually competitive. However, keep in mind that in some countries, foreign ATMs may charge an “international withdrawal fee” for every transaction.

Also, don’t forget to inform your banks that you will be traveling abroad. This way, you can swipe your purchases away without a hitch.

Enjoy the journey

Preparations can only do so much. There is still a bigger chance that your plans will get disrupted by the weather, the train or bus not arriving on time, or Google Maps not working properly as intended. But all these are part of the journey. Embrace the flexibility! Enjoy getting lost. It’s ideal to not be stressed during your much-needed vacation, but it’s these mishaps that make the trip even more memorable.
