No date? No problem!

Be unapologetically solo as the world celebrates Valentine’s Day. After all, V-day isn’t just confined to romance and couples, it can also be about loving one’s self.

So pick up your self-esteem and let us count the ways, together with pop doctor and online love guru Dr. Gia Sison, on why it’s okay to be single this Valentine’s Day.

1. Being single enables one to practice self-love. “We’ve heard it a lot of times—you can’t pour from an empty cup. Like for us doctors, how can we care for our patients if we’re sick? If eventually you meet the right person and you yourself medyo wasak ka, it can work but the problem is you might still have baggage na hindi na-close.”

Dr. Sison stressed that self-love is not selfish at all. “Self-love is the first step in helping others. Lahat naman tayo, we’re all broken. It’s nicer if we can mend ourselves first before we can mend others.”

2. You get to please yourself first instead of pleasing others. Dr. Gia shared that being single gives you the opportunity to be more mindful of what you want.

“Basically, people-pleasers tayo. We don’t want conflict. I mean, who wants conflict? [However,] the real depth and the real core of self-love is being able to say ‘no’ to people,” she stated.

Dr. Gia also added, “Lately, self-care and self-love have become a trend. Before, we gave too much of ourselves to others. We need to give something back to ourselves,” she explained.

3. Celebrate the freedom of being single. “It’s Valentine’s—there’s an obligation to give something if you’re a couple. Being single, it’s 95% off your mind because wala kang bibigyan ng gift,” Dr. Sison joked. “Being single will give you more time to think about what you really want in life.”

4. Singles can guiltlessly enjoy Valentine in two ways: solo or with friends/family. Dr. Sison observed that single people celebrate the romantic season according to what makes them happy. “Most of the time, singles find joy in either indulging on a spa massage or mani-pedi or going out with their friends or family. There’s half of them who celebrate friendships and there’s the other half who spend ‘me’ time,” she noted.

“It’s all about choices. Don’t be scared to choose what makes you happy,” she advised.

5. Singles can personalize their Valentine & genuinely enjoy the day. Though couples can also design their own Valentine, singles clearly have the upper hand, as they’re only accountable to themselves.

When asked about her advice to all the singles out there, “[Go ahead], be happy and treat yourself. If you want to go out, then do so. You can indulge in a feel-good activity if you want to. It’s really a choice. Do something out of the usual.” These nuggets of wisdom from Dr. Sison clearly show that singles can have fun too this Valentine’s season.
